The following is a summary of the activities and achievements of the SNU in 2011.
The Sierra Nevada Unit looks to the founding principles of it's parent organization, the Wally Byam Caravan Club, International to provide the foundation of the Unit. These principles guide the SNU in it's activities and it's management.

The SNU held a special rally at Campground by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe to commemorate it's 35th Anniversary. Rally participants enjoyed a very informative tour of the Lake Tahoe Heritage museum as well as visiting other Lake Tahoe attractions on their own. The highlight was the 3 hour dinner cruise on the M.S. Dixie.
We held rallies in three new locations - Hickison Petroglyphs near Austin, Campground by the Lake in South Lake Tahoe, and Scout Camp at Ft Churchill State Park
Rally highlights included: March at Weed Heights – crock pot potluck, April at Boca – a visit from NorCal members Tom & Hedda Smithson, May at Ft Sage – dinner under the awning to protect us from rain and hail, June at Sweetwater – amateur radio field day and a visit from Bruce who flew his vintage Cessna to the rally, July at Hickison – Doris and her pink flamingo regalia, August at Obsidian – our first joint rally, September at South Lake – 35th Anniversary Celebration, October Scout Camp – talks with the rangers, saving a stray dog,
The SNU strives to work with neighboring units to provide a broader and more enriching experience for Airstream RV owners. We enjoy visiting other unit rallies and events and always welcome visitors to SNU activities. In 2011 these efforts included:
SNU members participating in rallies sponsored by the NorCal Unit and the Oregon Unit. Several SNU members also met with members of the NorCal unit for a dinner at J.T.'s in Gardnerville.
We held our first joint rally with another WBCCI Unit – A rally at Obsidian Dome with The San Fernando Valley Unit. Special activities at this rally included a pancake breakfast and an omelets in a bag breakfast.
Guests participated in our April Rally at Boca, at the Obsidian Rally in August, and the South Lake rally in September.
SNU members participated in WBCCI Caravans, the special Rose Parade Rally in Pasadena, The Hobo Rally in Blythe, and the WBCCI International Rally in DuQuoin Illinois.
Three SNU members attended the Region 12 Rally in Jackson, CA – Jerry and Dyann Thornburg, Gary and Anita Haskett, and Bryan and Diane Leipper. The theme was Flamingos in the Foothills so we all took our pink flamingos to decorate our Airstreams. SNU President, Dyann Thornburg represented us at the Region 12 business meeting. We took the SNU diorama and it was prominently on display throughout the rally.
Public service announcements, the newsletter, and the website continue to be the primary communication tools of the SNU. The newsletter continues to receive rave reviews for content as well as style. The website has been instrumental in providing information and encouraging participation in rallies and other SNU activities. It received several very positive comments at the region 12 rally
“It's the Airstreams that bring us together but it's the people who keep us together” - Jerry Thornburg (2797) describing the SNU
"The WBCCI is an exclusive club because not everyone owns an Airstream! The idea is to get out and have fun with your RV - with friends who share common interests." - Bryan R. Leipper (772)
“The formula that the leadership in our unit uses comes straight from Wally and his creed which they have adopted as the primary focus of the group. It also comes by their determination to be inclusive with respect to the members, open to new ideas and by providing opportunities for everyone to participate in the way that best suits them.” - Former SNU member
