Here is a summary about why 97 can be a better route south from Eugene than I-5

You can save a lot of time and fuel as well as have better road conditions if you take I-5 to the route 58 exit (south side of Eugene, OR) and go east to Chemult and then on south to Weed, CA.

We run the big trucks this way as you only have 2 grades to pull versus 9 on I-5 and it saves us about 20 gal of fuel and about 40 min travel time.

The passes are almost always cleared of snow as soon as it hits, but do carry chains just in case. It's mostly 2 lane with a lot of nice scenery and small towns for rest stops. Collier State Park, just north of Klamath Falls is a good place to camp and has a logging museum just across the road. [zulu3 on RV.NET]
