In Memory of Richard H. (Wheels) Wheeler

Wheels passed away on February 27, 2020 after several years of declining health.

It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that Wheels went to live with his Lord this afternoon. He had been struggling this past year with various health issues and the last two weeks everything just started to shut down. He was home on Hospice and Doris, Doris's daughter, Wheel's daughter and family friends were with him when he passed away. He is now at peace. I know Wheels and Doris both really enjoyed their time camping with their SNU friends. Please keep Doris and family in your thoughts and prayers. - Cecelia Stansbury

Wheels and his wife Doris joined the SNU in 2008 when they attended our rally at the BLM campground at Eagle Lake. They were active members until 2019. Wheels served as SNU President in 2013 and 2014. He spearheaded the SNU involvement in 2009 Lyon County Fly-In at the Silver Springs Airport You can read the review of this special rally in the June 2009 SNU newsletter Here is an excerpt from that newsletter

Friday morning we got to work. Bryan and Dave helped set up some of the vendor tents. Dyann, Diane and Anita fixed up the pilot goody bags. The rest of us helped out as needed. Saturday was the big day for the air show. Jerry, Eric, Wheels, and Anita pitched in on the pancake breakfast set up. When things really got going, everyone chipped in. Among other things, Jerry and Eric were the primary cooks. Wheels cooked, served and assisted in other ways. Dyann helped serve breakfast. Janet, Sidney, and Melissa helped out taking tickets, Vicki and Anita made sure there was enough syrup and butter and that the tables were clean. Everyone helped out one way or another.

Wheels was also one of the SNU members to hold an amateur radio license ( K7RHW ) Wheels and Doris checked out several potential sites for SNU rallies. He put together some great reports with pictures, directions and information on the sites he thought might be of interest to the SNU. One of them was Green Creek near Bridgeport. The SNU held two rallies at that site.

They also participated in WBCCI Caravans, International Rallies, Region 12 rallies, and special event rallies. In 2013 Wheels was crowned Hobo King at the Region Hobo rally. Wheels contributed photos, articles and other memorabilia from these activities for SNU newsletters and the website. Much of this material can be found on the Wheeler’s travelogue page as well as the links listed below. Wheels really contributed a lot to the SNU in all sorts of ways.

Wheels was a military pilot. After his military career, he flew with the Civil Air Patrol out of Carson City. He often had a beacon at rallies so CAP pilots could use his beacon for search training.
